Project Description

Providing health insurance through microfinance structures has been an idea gaining recent attention as a method to provide insurance in poorer, rural populations. This study will evaluate a community based micro health insurance program in a sub-district of rural Maharashtra, India. Through randomizing the insurance offer to women in microfinance Self Help Groups at the village level, the study will evaluate the causal effect of the insurance offer, and the contract itself, on changes in health seeking behavior, specifically access to, and utilization of, health care facilities. The study will additionally assess the reduction of risk from the insurance product by evaluating changes in the use of microfinance credit and poverty indicators.
